In six classes, I will show you some of the most important information that people who know how to draw take for granted. You will be introduced to contour drawing, perspective, value, and interpreting color with charcoal in easy lessons. This class will focus on drawing from observation, training the eye to recognize visual relationships, and the development of drawing skills using line and shape.

This class will focus on drawing from observation, training the eye to recognize visual relationships, and the development of drawing skills using line and shape. A variety of black and white drawing mediums will be used including pencil, charcoal, conté and ink. In this class students will use still life compositions to study the spatial relationships that exist between objects. Contour line exercises, simple rules of perspective, along with shading will teach students that drawing is fun.

Students will learn:

  • Basic drawing techniques

  • Drawing from observation

  • Using Different drawing mediums: pencil, charcoal, , conte and ink

  • Introduction to contour and perspective drawing

  • Different ways to use shading

  • This workshop will assist students in obtaining a certain level of confidence in their drawing ability and to acquire skills that can be used with any medium.

    Supply list:
    Vine charcoal,
    Kneaded eraser
    Masking tape
    Drawing board
    Copy Paper 11” x 17” or 8 ½” x 14”
    #2 pencils
    Charcoal pencil …prefer Carbothello black, bistre and white
    White conte
    Shading stump
    Sandpaper or sandpad…fine
    Other materials may be added for explorative techniques as time permits.

    Mike Beeman is a signature member of both the Pastel Society of America, the Pastel Society of Colorado, and also belongs to the Pastel Society of the Northern Rockies. He has been has been a finalist in the Top 100 annual competition in the Pastel Journal’s Magazine for 2005 and 2007.
