Using the Quick Pose to Create Character Pastel Portraits

Spend an intensive three days in this workshop learning the basics of creating innovative and exciting pastel portraits from quick pose studies. Students will be working from a live model to develop quick pose sketches that will be used to create character pastel portraits.
Students will learn:

  • How to develop an approach to drawing quick pose portraits in three to five minutes
  • Basic portrait proportions
  • Simple approaches in rendering the eyes, nose and mouth in pastel
  • How to block in a portrait in with two and three values
  • Working from live models
  • Developing character pastel portraits from quick pose sketches
  • Key components to look for in value mapping the portrait
  • Critique sessions and open discussions

Supply list

  • 431 Steel Gray Canson Pastel Paper
  • pastels..(starter sets for portraits would work fine)
  • Pastel support/drawing board for 11"x 14" paper
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Copy Paper 11" x 17" or 8 ˝" x 14"
  • Carbothello™ Pastel Pencils Black, 1400/730, Caput Martuum Red 1400/645 and Bistre 1400/635 (Jerry's Artarama stocks these)

    Mike Beeman is a signature member of both the Pastel Society of America, the Pastel Society of Colorado, and also belongs to the Pastel Society of the Northern Rockies.
